Context, myself (23M) have just been through a breakup with a long term partner and am trying to find a place to live as I still live with Ex partner.

Issue is, everything is so god damn expensive. I have 0 hope of living alone as flats near me are £1000pm by itself, not including bills, council tax etc. I’ve tried SpareRoom but everything on there is still 900+ and if it’s anything lower, they never respond to my queries. I’ve been trying for over a month and I’ve had two messages back.

It’s just impossible to find an affordable place to live as someone on minimum wage… I just don’t know what to do and I feel like crap… I can’t stay here and my family live 300 miles away so I’m a bit stuffed.

Anyone have any good sites for cheap housing or any other ideas? Thank yooou

  1. Zoopla, Rightmove, Facebook marketplace or local buy sell groups. There will definitely be houseshares all bills included somewhere. Also you could try getting on the housing register with the local council doubt it would be quick but they might be able to help.

  2. Short term I’d think renting a room is your best bet, ask about in local Facebook groups perhaps ?

Not sure where you are or what your local councils policy is but get in touch with their homeless team and see what the procedure is. Mine you have to present yourself as homeless in the first instance and they will signpost you accordingly but they should have a few private landlords they use so could put you in touch with someone – mine also helps with deposit schemes and grants

  3. If you’re on minimum wage, then maybe your job is easier to find again elsewhere? Could look to move back to family and find a job there

  4. Good luck with your search, but worse case scenario is you have to move back to your parents and find another job. The simple fact is that on minimum wage you are always going to need to share somewhere as you simply don’t really earn enough to live on your own, and it’s unfortunate for you that there is a shortage of rentals on the market

  5. Look at Facebook groups, not marketplace but there might be groups like ‘Flatshares in x town’ or ‘Spare Rooms in x town’. These are where people post rooms to rent out. Always go view them before hand though. There are scams but you can usually pick them out easily (generic photos, doesn’t sound like a local etc).

Have you got the premium spareroom as well? I know it’s a bummer to have to pay a website but it did really help me get some messages back.
