Edit – Sorry just to digress, should there be a limit in place?

Our PM Boris Johnson just turned 55 when he took office and I think that’s a good age right!

  1. Technically there is no age limit, though I personally believe there should be an upper limit.

  2. There is currently no law or amendment that stipulates a maximum age… just that minimum age is 35.

  3. The document that sets forth the requirements for eligibility do not describe a maximum age.

  4. There isn’t a law about it. It is something that voters discuss and consider, though.

  5. There’s not, but personally, I feel like it definitely depends on the individual person.

  6. I’m pretty much against any limits on eligibility.

I see nothing that makes me believe that a 7 or 107 year old could find enough votes to get elected but, if any could, I see no reason their supporter should be deprived of electing who they want.

I think it’s also important to remember that you’re not voting for a random 7 or 107 year old but a specific one. These conversations inevitable include people insisting their parents, aunts/uncles, grandparents, etc. are in their 70s and senile but that has nothing to do with the mental faculties of the 70 year old running.

  7. Not legally, but informally, you would definitely be too old if your age comes in the way of being an effective president, or if you are dead.

  8. No. Theoretically, you can run at 120 years old. So a veteran of WWI could be President, if he could withstand the stress of running without having a heart attack.

    >!I think there shouldn’t be a retirement age, but instead an age at which regular examinations of medical and mental fitness should be conducted, with a failure to meet a certain standard disqualifying the person from future office. We shouldn’t be writing off the elderly, but we also shouldn’t be letting folks in genuine mental decline keep riding the incumbency effect just because having a limit offends the olds.!<

  10. I thought it was common knowledge that American politics is full of geriatrics

Like a good amount of the most important figures in American politics have been on the national level since the 80s.

  11. An official age limit? No. But should the people be sensible enough to **not** place an elderly man suffering clear cognitive decline in the White House? Yes. The current administration should serve as an example of this.

  12. No upper age cap just a minimum (35). I do think there should be an upper age cap though. 70 or 75 at the highest.

  13. There is no legal age limit.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a good way to test for age related mental issues and that should be a factor.

Joe Biden has shown on numerous occasions examples of mental acuity problems. It’s gone from funny to just sad. Ronald Reagan had moments like that late in his second term as he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Woodrow Wilson suffered a stroke and his wife basically ran the country.

On a Senatorial level, Diane Feinstein’s memory is such an issue that Vanity Fair published an article about it. Strom Thurmond retired at the age of 100. He was completely out of it by the end of his office, and was a relic of a period when the KKK had millions of members (which explains why he was also a rabid racist).

Even if memory isn’t an issue, there is a point where they need to hand off to the next generation that has a stake in the future. And now is the time for Boomers to fade off.
