Tomorrow I’m gonna travel to a town where I know an acquaintance. I met them for the first time last year and since I left (8 months ago) we haven’t spoken once. Would it be weird texting them and aking them to meet with me to say hello? Or do you think they would appreciate? I hung out with this person for like 4 months but we haven’t spoken since I left that town.

Probably should’ve given then some more notice. No harm in asking though, just don’t expect a yes.
Nothing wrong with texting, just don’t expect a yes. I’d say something like “Hey! Long time since we chat/saw each other! I’m going to be stopping in x town. If you are free I’d love to catch up!”

if there was no reason to speak, not weird
I think the answer is if you want to. If you don’t care then don’t bother but if you’d like to see them then I don’t think it’s weird! It bothers me a little bit that some people would think it’s weird.
