I have been working as an English teacher in Korea for a few years. Got married and now have to find a way to make my way back to the states. I graduated with a BA degree, but I didn’t really like it, but I finished it after a few years of traveling just to say I had a degree. I started teaching in English in Korea because I was interested in traveling. Got married, had a kid. Now, the ‘fun’ of living in a foreign country has gone, I’m 33, and it’s basically impossible to support my family honestly on the salary I have been making for the past few years. My wife has decided to go into nursing. And she will be finished at the end of the year. I should go back to the States and get a job and a place set up so my family can come over after a few months. Do you have any suggestions? I don’t want to teach. And I don’t see myself venturing back into the banking world. Should I try to start my own business or learn some in demand skills and job hunt? I am really getting depressed just thinking about it. If you need more information ….. just ask

  1. Cyber security.

I got into it at 29, completely changed my life. Went from making 35k a year to well into six figures my first year in the industry. Work at a start up now that will hit big in a few years. I’m planning to retire by 50. Reach out if you want to chat.

  2. That’s funny, I actually worked in banking before teaching English overseas.

I ended up in mental health.

  3. If they are in demand now, you are too late. You are at the mercy of the whims of a handful of people who control all the resources of the world. Worry less, play more. Live simply.

  4. I have a BA in English, taught for a little while, now I work in advertising. If you don’t want to switch entirely, I love my job and have great work-life balance. On the other hand, there are a lot of copywriters and content writers, so it might be tough to stand out.

Early to mid 30s isn’t too old to learn a skilled trade – if you were going to go back to school I’d become a heavy machine tech. Tons of money there.
