My partner and I are interested in trying deepthroating but she has a really sensitive gag reflex. We’ve started reading about desensitizing it by using a toothbrush on the back of the tongue. The only issue is that she’s worried she’s going to lose her gag reflex completely and then have issues with eating. I did some research and it’s actually a normal process of aging that you lose the reflex to cough and it becomes easier to choke on food, so this seems like a legitimate health concern.

So my question is, does anyone know if your gag reflex can come back after you’ve desensitized it? Or is it a permanent thing? Has anyone desensitized it but then had trouble with randomly choking on food?

  1. I’ve had a gagging reflex, too, but I got rid of it just with practice. I didn’t use any special techniques, just practiced in giving the head. After a while, I noticed that I don’t gag anymore even if I just keep my mouth open and my partner is pushing his penis deep into my throat. However, I still need breaks in the process just to get a sip of air, otherwise I’m gonna gag, too.

Also, if the receiving partner is okay with that, she can try to lay down at the edge of the bed with her head hanging down and mouth open. In this position, the line of her mouth and throat will be nearly straight, which will likely make the throat penetration easier. That works for me, at least.

  2. I deep throat and give oral regularly. My gag reflex seems to depend on how turned on I am. The more desperate the urge, my gag reflex seems to disappear for the most part. There are moments where it’ll catch me and I just use my hands as a short reprieve while still using my tongue.

Now I’m not sure a toothbrush will help her get used to it. If I brush my tongue with a toothbrush I still gag everytime and very quickly.

It’s just a matter of practice and learning placement and angles and knowing your own limits imo

  3. Never actually heard of it being a health problem. I’ve known a lot of folks who’ve trained their gag reflex, none who’ve ever complained about choking because of it.

I think it’s probably because if you consciously train to suppress it, it’ll still exist while eating

  4. I deepthroat and I 100% can still gag when I need to. Part of it is just finding a technique that works for her, part of it I think is training the brain. Don’t panic, even if you gag. Be calm and let your body re-adjust.
