I see a lot of tips for adding onto what someone else says but honestly that’s something that I can manage. I find it very easy to talk when there’s more than 1 person but when it’s one on one my mind just blanks out sometimes and even the other person might not say anything for a while. How can I think of topics to talk about?

listen to the person, when someone says a sentence just pick apart the words and you’ll find something to talk about, say i’m going fishing today-what’d you do today, when’d you start fishing, etc
I saw FORD (Family, Occupation, Recreation and Dreams) a while back. But whichever route you take depends on what you know about the person already. Talking about dreams/aspirations may be your safest bet. But be genuinely interested in the answers to the questions you ask. It might be better to just be silent in some cases.

I have this problem as well and came here to ask about it. I can keep a conversation going, I just struggle to come up with a good starting topic.
“What’s the craziest thing that happened to you this week?”
Silence isn’t bad by default. It means you guys don’t feel a need to keep chatting at all times. My wife and I have quiet times together, and it’s fine.
