My boss and I joined the company around the same time, and at that point they were not my boss. I’d say we became pretty good friends and I really enjoyed getting to work with them. I got them a very tiny birthday gift at that point, just some cookies and a house plant.
Now they’re my boss, and while I don’t want to break any ethics or give gifts to seem like I’m sucking up, I also don’t know if it’s mean to skip over their birthday this year 🙁
Any advice?

[Don’t gift up.](https://www.askamanager.org/2016/12/the-rules-you-need-for-office-gift-giving.html) Just wish them a happy birthday.
Gifts are not necessary, just your well wishes.
“Skip The Gift!” (make that your mantra now)
You could put a cute sign on their door/cubicle with a joke birthday cartoon or something from online. That way other people will know it’s their birthday and they can have fun birthday greetings or whatever. Just being *noticed* on your birthday is enough, imo.
