  1. Depends what you want doing. Some new cupboard and a nice countertop… probably. Want a plumbed in Brita filtered self cleaning 10 grid Rational combi oven? Then no definitely not.

  2. If you aren’t installing it yourself then no. You are looking at £2.5k – £3.5k just for the kitchen installers, then add a plumber on top of that.

However, installing kitchens, and plumbing (not gas) is pretty easy, just time consuming. You could easily pick it up by watching a bunch of videos. Then just pay a carpenter to come and do your worktop.

Our kitchen itself including cupboards and appliances came under that budget, but we did the vast majority of the work ourselves.

  3. Go on the diy kitchen website and price up what you want, that’ll give you a good idea.

Could easily be a grand or more to fit.

You’ll probably want tiling done too

    Any plastering or remedial work?

    Plumbers and electricians are expensive.

5 grand doesn’t go very far in a kitchen depending on how big it is.

  4. Depends how big it is.

I’ve just spent 20k on a large kitchen and utility room. with all appliances

  5. We built our entire kitchen out of construction timber. Absolutely no joinery skills, designed it at home on paper, had the woodyard cut all the lengths when we bought it, rammed it all together with big screws and a makita driver. Then slapped some clear acrylic sheets on top so the wood showed through. We got knocked down a little bit when we sold the house but it was for less than the amount we saved by not paying for professionals to install a kitchen 😂

The whole kitchen cost about £500 with the sink and cost of a plumber to put it in properly, and we loved it, also we could move the units around if we felt like changing the kitchen layout.

Not to everyone’s taste of course, but I feel like there’s a bit of an idea that a kitchen has to be fitted and professional.. But there are ways to do it yourself with no real skills. I wouldn’t do electrics or plumbing myself though.

  6. How much are you willing to do yourself?
Putting kitchen cupboards together can be time consuming but unless you have a physical disability of some sort you should be able to do most of it, maybe get someone in for electric and gas, and maybe some of the trickier bits.

  7. A local carpenter will fit the kitchen and should have plumbing and sparky contacts they know and trust. With tiling on top i think £5k is a tad tight a budget.

  8. Maybe edit the post to say what this “big chunk of work” actually is, and where in the country you are.

  9. Mine cost me about £13k all in. Moved some electrics. Bought half decent appliances.

  10. It depends what you want.

About 3 years ago, I paid about £7.5k for my (rather small) kitchen to be stripped out, replastered, new units, new countertop, new hob, new extractor hood, new sink, new oven, new tiles on the floor. The advantage I had is I’ve got electricians in the family so the placing of new sockets, lights and oven/hob switches only cost me materials.

So it really depends if you mean “do up” or completely refurbish.

  11. Ours came in at £5k, it was a big chunk of work and I did most of it myself. Almost the same as yours but I imagine not exactly the same so this comment is unlikely to help in the slightest.

  12. If you’re in the south east drop me a message, we cover all aspects of building works and believe in helping out those who need it, obviously this is Reddit so you are welcome to just ignore me. Hope you get sorted, this is achievable for £5k you just need to be savvy.

  13. “Do up” is pretty vague. Whole new kitchen? Nope. New doors, appliances & lick of paint? Probably.
If you are looking to move wires/plumbing you’d cover that ok but not much else

  14. i did up my kitchen with 2 friends and didn’t replace any appliances and it still cost 4 grand and that was 10 years ago, so am gonna say no.
