Do any of y’all’s states have privatized drivers license tests?

1. Idaho, where I originally got my license, didn’t have privatized testers… but they weren’t DMV employees. They were the teachers at our high school who taught Driver’s Ed.

2. There are both private companies that do the teaching and testing as well as employees and others contracted by the state.

   Anecdotally, my road test was done with a private company that signed off on it. My motorcycle test was administered by somebody hired by the state I believe. The moto class was taught by a private company.

3. I would assume they’re talking about private drivers ed courses, not the actual driving test to get a license

4. My daughter took lessons from a local driving school and the DMV did not require her to take a test.

5. Yeah. I’m pretty sure that in Ohio the BMV uses a franchise model where technically the local offices are all private companies providing service on behalf of the state government.

6. I have never seen or heard of it but we have 50 states and I haven’t lived in them all.

7. Arizona has private companies licenced to provide traditional MVD services like titles, licences, and testing for a small extra fee. But all the requirements and tests are the same.

8. *shrug* I’m from your state and never had a practical test at all. So if you count my dad as “private” then sure.

   Our parent taught option is wild.

9. Washington DMV accepts tests administered by private driving schools. My classes, written and practical test were done at the same place, then I took the result to the DMV

10. Never heard of that. Anything relating to the CA DMV is a nightmare, why would they make it easier?

11. As a 16/17 year old in Maine I took drivers Ed from a private instruction company. I took the test with the state agency.

    I’ve never seen/heard of a state with a privatized drivers license test. Also there are some states where a private company is contracted by the state to handle the collection of car registration tax payments and issuing of license plates in each county, which may be what the people OP is referring to meant.

12. In my state, you can pay for a private driving school and they provide you w a road test “waiver” and you take that to the DMV. After you pass their class, of course.
