Get him to a therapist
The best thing to do is to encourage him to seek professional help.
Otherwise, distracting him when you notice that he’s particularly down would be a good thing. If he’s doing an activity where he actually has to engage or focus on something else then he’s not having depressive thoughts
You smooch him up and down his neck, laugh at everything that’s funny and be happy yourself.
Getting help is good too.
Apart from psychological, a large percentage of depression is caused by health problems, such as not getting enough sleep/exercise, unhealthy food, not having enough social contacts. In any case it might be good to encourage him to become more active. Also think about keeping yourself mentally+physically healthy first.
