Warning: random post (I am a little bit high)

I live in a very wealthy are of Southern California. I have been here for 15 years and it just has become much more upscale in the past 10 years. I am a mechanic with my own specialty shop. I consider myself successful. I drive an old ass car that is well tuned and not an eyesore (paint is faded). I could afford a new car but I really love my little vehicle and it gets 35 miles a gallon. It purrs because I keep it up nicely. I am a frugal guy. I would rather save my money as I have 2 kids and I know they will need help.

Now to my point. Sometimes in this society we live in I feel like an outkast. All I see around me are bmw’s, mercedes, sprinter vans, teslas, etc. I just see it all as a status symbol. I really don’t care what people think of me and I feel like buying a new car would kind of give in to that. I mean if the car gave me troubles I would absolutely get another car. I guess I am just more practical.

Does anyone else ever feel like this?

  1. It’s true, a lot of things are a status symbol: cars, clothes, homes. It’s good that you’re not worried what people will think of you, people who value their self worth through money will never be satisfied unless they’re constantly upgrading and doing better then your peers which sounds like a waste of time, energy and money.

  2. Flow the way you wanna be… if you’re curious on what’s the other side then go for it. You’ll eventually learn yourself.

  3. Own your weird.

Of those people around you who you feel might be judging you because you are not driving a brand new car, I wonder how many of them are up to their eyeballs in debt?

How many are hiding how miserable they are?

Pretty much everything in our society that you are “supposed to do” all those “measures of success” are all based on someone’s marketing campaign.

    Bacon for breakfast, marketing campaign.

    Diamond engagement ring, marketing campaign.

The design of your house, marketing campaigns

Orange juice for breakfast, marketing campaigns.

Decide what makes you happy, as long as it does not harm anyone else, do that, boldly.

If it makes someone else unhappy that is their business.
