The third edition of the European Games are on and I’m wondering how popular is it since it looks to be in its inception still. How well do you think your country will do?

For comparison, later in the year we’ll have the Pan American Games as well and at least in Brazil they enjoy some popularity even though I feel they were more popular back in the day, probably because Rio hosted them.

  1. I’ve no idea what those are. To make sure it wasn’t just me, I’ve checked the largest sports newspapers and they’re all talking about football signings. I’m guessing these European Games are not super popular.

  2. Not really, even though Poland hosts them this year, when the idea of application for it was announced it was met with harsh criticism exactly because of barely existing recognizability and little popularity of these games, while the cost of organization is quite high (estimated 1.7 billion zlotys which is around 380 million euros) and it’s highly unlikely it will pay off.

Personally I don’t watch or follow it in any way.

  3. Lol. Lmao.

We’re hosting them this year and nobody cares. Those few who care mostly just complain about how much money we spent on something nobody cares about.

  4. In the sport news, there’s the women’s basketball championship mostly in these days (which is not that popular anyway).

  5. Like some others here, I had no idea what the European Games are or that they were currently going on. I checked a big German sports site, where they *are* mentioned though – including a prominent “What are those Games anyway?” FAQ article. Apparently the big German public broadcasters (+ Eurosport) have the TV rights, but decided against doing any live broadcasts, which tells me all I need to know about how popular the games are. The same stations don’t have any problems showing 6 or even 12 hours of live sports on random weekends for all kinds of other sports.

Also the rival event, the [European Championships](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Championships_(multi-sport_event)), which were held in Munich last year, have been much more prominent – maybe that has something to do with it as well.

  6. Ah so those are the random olympics-like sport events that sports channels broadcast at weird hours during the day.

Yeah not a lot of people care.

  7. They were popular in Glasgow when Glasgow hosted them, but I don’t think many people here would even know that the event is on again at the moment.

Is that the athletics in Oslo, or is that a different competition?

  8. The fact that I had to google it says everything there is to know in regards to their popularity.

  9. Apparently, so popular that our national broadcaster isn’t broadcasting them. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  10. I’m kinda a sport geek, I follow so many sports, so many competitions yet never ever heard of that event….

There is already established sports events, getting more is just greed, both sportsmen, sportswomen are already full in training and said events

And as far I checked the places, Baku (hello sportwashing), Minsk (hello russia state) and Kraków (that look resonable)

  11. Not popular at all.
I didn’t even know about them until this post, and I guess many other portuguese don’t know either.

  12. Lol I had to Google this because I’d never heard of them and apparently our national broadcaster is calling them the “European Championship for country teams”. And apparently there’s a few sports that are using the European Games as their European Championship games.

There is a live stream on the national broadcaster’s website but I don’t see any live TV events.

  13. I’m gonna be real with you, this is the first time I heard about them. I’m assuming it’s something olympia like just for Europe?

  14. I went into an EU rabbit hole a few days ago, and I found out about them, but before this, I had no idea they existed

  15. Wasn’t even aware they were on. I remember some press when they were launched a few years ago saying that it was weird there was no continental games in Europe and how they would be a boost for European athletes while plenty of people pointed out that the first host Azerbaijan isn’t actually in Europe by many definitions.

Nobody in England really pays any attention to track and field outside of the Olympics at all though, same with the rest of the sports on the program. There’s a huge amount of competition for uk sports fans eyes in June anyway with the ashes, England national football team games, the US open golf, the European F1 season and the queens club tennis all sports much more popular than athletics

  16. The first two editions of this event were held in Azerbaijan and Belarus. I think that forever tainted the whole show.

  17. I watch them sometimes. Not particularly invested in them, so it gives opportunities for some cool sportsmanship

  18. I had to google it to make sure what it is. My hunch is that most people might come across it when flipping through channels, but that’s about it. Maybe they’ll know via the news if someone from their country wins something.

  19. Never even heard of them, hasn’t been mentioned in any of the news I’ve read, heard or seen either.

  20. I’ve never heard of them. Is it a big articulate sport? Or multiple like Olympics?
