Just sold an iMac on fb marketplace.
Collected in person and the buyer did a bank transfer in front of me but it’s still not in my account over 2 hours later.

They say they’ve called the bank and it has gone through but can sometimes take a day. They then said they’d come back and wait until it had gone through to reassure me but they haven’t come back. I’m not sure what this post is apart from me ranting and being annoyed at myself.

I don’t suppose any super hackers could track someone down through what is probably a fake fb profile? 😂

  1. It could be legitimate but at the same time it’s a very common scam. It’s a scam that works well because there is an element of truth to it.

  2. Scam 100%.

Do not let anything out of your house until you have the money in your bank. Or, just take cash.

  3. Common scam unfortunately, some of them use a fake app which looks like a real bank app (sometimes Bank of Ireland) and use the excuse that it will take 24 hours to go through, by that time they have your item(s) and the phone number was a payg number and a fake facebook profile.

Always make sure the money is in your account, using your own device.

  4. To be fair it should come through straight away. When we bought a dog, we put £1 in first and both confirmed it via my bank. Then put over the rest.

Guy did look at me a bit strange but I said if I’d sent to the wrong bank I was only £1 out of pocket rather than hundreds.

I assume this didn’t happen. Do you have any CCTV or anything with the persons face or car reg?

  5. Just here to say it does sound like you have been scammed, but don’t beat yourself up about it. Think of it as a moderately expensive lesson. I am hoping for the best though, do update if it’s not a scam.

  6. I got as far as “…the buyer bid a bank transfer….” and knew it was a scam.

  7. Don’t hand over the product until the money is in your account. Just in case.

  8. Transfer done on their own device?
It’ll be a fake app and you’re fucked.

Should’ve let them log in using your device, while monitoring them.
No money in your account = No release of any item.

  9. A word of caution here, if his bank is in a different banking group to your bank the transfer can take *time* normally about 24 hours

  10. You were scammed – they likely said it was metro Bank or an Irish bank.

I bet they showed you them doing a transfer on their phone? It’s all fake.
