If one of your friends had an, “I know a guy” moment and then called you, what would they be calling you for?

  1. Food guy, I’m no chef but I like to think I have a solid base of recipes and the skills to make them. Have actually had in laws call me for advice a few times

  2. Extremely random facts that are interesting for 5 seconds. Or just the Iā€™m Down guy, whatever time, day, place, Iā€™m down.

This has taken me a surprising amount of time to think about and that makes me sad.

  3. I’m the guy who ‘knows a guy.’ I’m the middle guy that connects others to the ‘guy.’

  4. Worldbuilding. I’m meticulous when it comes to details, lore, and crafting all manner of world details.

  5. Guidance on financial/tax decisions like making 401(k) allocation selections or starting a business

I have a boring set of skills friends call on tbh lol

  6. Never been called for anything as far as I can remember, neither am particularly good at anything idk

  7. Questions about guns, home maintenance, anime, and computers almost always end up coming to me.

  8. Questions about physics, star wars lore, cooking tips and moshpit and festival etiquette.

  9. Ether MacOS issues or far more likely my weird extensive knowledge of Volvoā€™s..

This actually kind of already happened, a friend (we are/were both mechanics) called me about a Volvo V70 D5 that they had in the shop with a small oil leak..

First question is it an i5d, VED5 or VED4, was a VED5, those usually leak from the charge pipe, when one of the turbos is worn (the VED5 and VED4 D5 both have sequential Twin Turbos), a little oil is normal but large amounts means it is time for new turbo / turbos.

  10. Home repair. I spent the majority of my childhood bouncing between different home repair or improvement projects.

I can’t swap a main electric pannel but i can do just about any other electric work. Plumbing i can do all of it from ejector pits to full replacing of the entire system. Drywall, rough and finish carpentey I’m passable, roofing i hate but i can do repairs and full tear off and replacement. Kitchen renovations, new natural gas lines, bathroom renovations including full custom tile showers.

I’m not a fast as a pro but i can teach you how to do it and i have enough tools to get the work done. Especially if you have a small emergency repair i can probably handle it.

  11. I am the “history guy”. If someone needs help on there history homework the call me.

  12. I’m the guy who reads books and therefore knows some things. “We should see what alxndrblack thinks of that” is a common prompt.

Little do they know, I don’t fucking know anything.

  13. My friends friend ā€œdamn I wish there was a guy here that was a silly gooberā€

    My friend ā€œI know a guyā€

  14. Could be anything. People think I know more than I do an Iā€™m always like: ā€œwhhhhhy do you think Iā€™d know *that*??ā€

  15. I have friends who randomly call me, go “hey chief, is this it?” and ill just randomly pick between “nah this aint it chief” or “yeah this is it chief” and then we hang up. sometimes they text later to let me know what it was about, usually I’ve just made small meaningless decisions for people like if they eat at a certain restaurant or go to a certain club.
    I think its pretty funny

  16. “Quick, we need a complete breakdown of the Horus Heresy”

Thats never and will never happen

  17. Iā€™m the, ā€œfix your guitarā€ or ā€œfix your boatā€ guy.
I know, weird combo but Iā€™ve been in both industries before.

  18. Moving furniture or questions on writing academic papers. I am the educated lifter.

  19. Iā€™m the ā€œjack of all tradesā€ guy. For all those times where youā€™re entering a world you know absolutely nothing about and feel uncomfortable taking the first step, Iā€™m the guy who gets called. Why? Two reasons. #1 Iā€™m extremely empathetic about peopleā€™s emotions delving into new things. I see how complicated all these worlds get when you dive DEEP into them and experts usually do a shit job making beginner guides content. #2 Iā€™m an extremely curious person and I love doing deep dives into a number of different worlds. While I never continue down the rabbit hole far enough to become an expert, I always dive far enough to understand the concepts and the language.

Different worlds I can talk to newbies about, technical personal stuff (personal finance, home IT, handyman trade stuff, automotive, yearly taxes, etc.), deep stuff (philosophy, morals, society, relationships, politics, government, economics, etc), games of all different types and genres (board games, card games, all sports, video games, etc), entertainment, travel, bla bla bla.

Iā€™m the guy that loves talking with you about whatever youā€™re most interested in. And I have a heart from learning from you, too, because whatever youā€™re most interested in, you probably know even more than me. And if I recognize that maybe you donā€™t, I still love to share in the thing that youā€™re excited about. That, and I can bring in other worlds that impact the thing youā€™re super excited about and open up even more avenues you might not have considered about the thing you love.

And then weā€™re friends, and youā€™re about to step into something youā€™re worried about stepping into, Iā€™m the ā€œguyā€. And Iā€™m horribly honest, too, because there are so many worlds out there I havenā€™t explored yet, a lot of the time my answer is ā€œI have absolutely no idea about that worldā€.
