Can you have HPV and spread it even if you test negative?

So a friend of mine told me HPV can be dormant for years, that’s why you get your pap smear every year. But then if the virus it’s still there I guess that means that even when you test negative you can still have the virus and spread but you will never know until decades later when it’s shows as abnormal
