Is it rude to correct them? I just received an email from someone I don’t know well and they did the above. It isn’t their fault at all, they’d never seen it written down before so they had to guess how it was spelt and it is quite an unusual name. When I sign off, should I spell it correctly or should I spell it the same way they spelt it? They told me they struggle with grammar so I don’t want to make them feel bad. I could also use the full version of my name so that I don’t have to worry about correcting them… Maybe I’m overthinking this 🙃

  1. I would. A name is very important, it makes who you are. I’m doing it all the time.

  2. That’s absurd to purposely spell your own name incorrectly on the reply email lol. You already recognize that is an honest mistake, just sign off with your actual name and see if they pick up on it. If they don’t on the next email then correct them, it isn’t a big deal. If anything just think about how embarassing it would be if this went on for months that they didn’t spell your name correctly and it’s far less embarassing if they got corrected early on

  3. How will they know how to spell your name correctly if you won’t spell the name correctly? I think as long as you don’t point it out to them that they spelled it incorrectly, they should not be offended by you spelling your name correctly.

One of the ways we learn correct grammar is by observing correct gramma, so for their sake write in propper grammar.
