I get a lot of social anxiety going to events but I really want to try going out more. There are a couple of people who I’m no longer friends with and the friendship ended in a dramatic way.
Its a small community so theres always a high chance I’ll see them. My instinct is to isolate myself and not go to any events but then I feel like they’ve “won”. I am trying to tell myself I deserve to go out and have fun too, rather than hiding away.
Last time we bumped into each other we did really awkward small talk and it was excruciating. I would rather not talk at all but don’t know how to set that boundary without it being really rude and potentially cause more drama.
How can I better prepare myself for the inevitable awkwardness?

Don’t invite a conversation with them. Say “hi” and keep moving.
