La Malinche was a woman originally from the territory that makes up present-day Mexico, and who became the translator, adviser and lover of the conquistador Hernán Cortes, helping him in the conquest of the Aztec Empire.

  2. Nothing. I assume that I probably learned about her during all the years of school when we talked about conquistadors as my schools spent a ridiculous amount of time on that, but I don’t believe I have thought of or heard of her in any way since then. If I recall correctly, she was a slave, so she probably made the best she could out of a very difficult situation.

  3. This is the first I’ve heard of her, so I don’t really have deep thoughts. I’d imagine that there’s a lot of people who villainize her. Personally, I’d question how much choice she had in taking on that role. Conquistadors weren’t exactly known for valuing consent after all.

  4. I don’t think about her at all. I’ve never heard of her until this post (unless it was something that was taught in high school, and high school for me was 30+ years ago).
