Hi all,

My wife and I are taking our two children (aged 8 and 4) to Dorset, staying around 30 mins car journey north of Weymouth beach. We are there for 5 days and want to ensure we make the most of our time there. For those of you from Dorset or who’ve visited, what trips/locations would you recommend, and why?

  1. Take a trip to Portland Bill on an open top bus. Amazing views of Chesil beach and an exhilarating experience.

Walk along the Cobb at Lyme Regis, do some crabbing, and then visit the little aquarium that allows you to feed fish.

Do a little museum crawl in Dorchester.

  2. Lulworth Cove and Durdle door are always worth a trip, though not sure how engaged the little ones will be.

Monkey world isn’t too far away if they like animals (Don’t all kids?). Probably a bit young for the tank museum which is nearby, unless they really like tanks for some reason!

It’s a bit more of a trek, but if you wanted to go out for the full day, go to Poole, then do a boat trip to Swanage which is a lovely small seaside resort and the trip takes you past old harry rocks and a few other sights. (Unfortunately I don’t think there is a boat from Weymouth). You can then get a steam train up to Corfe castle. I did that for my Birthday last year.

  3. Dear God, I wish I could think of a way to make the “endorse it” joke work right now…

  4. If you are in the purbecks looking for somewhere to eat the Scott arms in Kingstonhas an amazing view of corfe castle. https://www.thescottarms.com/

+1 on durdle door and lulworth cove, 2 of the most scenic places in England. Be warned on a nice day traffic and parking can be horrific!

Have a Purbeck ice cream. Gives the Italians a run for their money.

    Like steam trains? Swanage railway.
    Swanage is nice.
