What or who surprised you wasn’t American?

  1. Probably one of the many Canadian actors who have become famous and prevalent in the US like Ryan Reynolds.

  2. Christian Bale, I don’t know why I just assumed he was an American actor. I remember being surprised to hear him speaking in an interview

  3. My first exposure to Tom Holland was Spider-Man so I was surprised to find out he’s British

  4. I was introduced to Hugh Laurie in House, MD. He had a pretty good accent, I guess, because I didn’t know he was British.

  5. George Orwell and Hoozier, the latter because he talks a lot about love, religion, and drugs simultaneously which seemed pretty damn American to me, and his first album just reminded me of The Devil All The Time (not that I’ve seen that either to be honest but same vibes from what I have seen)

  6. Mark Addy, he definitely doesn’t get enough love and his American accent was so flawless it never occurred to me that he wasn’t American. *So much so* that when I saw him in The Full Monty I was impressed with his British accent. Floored I tell you.

Also kind of crushing in an intellectual “I appreciate his talent” sort of way.

  7. The guy who played Cpt Winters in Band of Brothers. I was shocked when I heard an interview with him

  8. I was surprised when I found out Elon Musk wasn’t (originally) American. He’s actually from South Africa and immigrated here.

  9. Lots of Canadians. If you’re Canadian and reading this, I apologize. But it’s sometimes hard to differentiate a Canadian from someone from one of the northern United States. Until they say ‘house’ or ‘about’ and have that distinct twist on the vowel.

  10. KitKat: It is British.

    Philips: It’s a Dutch company.

~~The band America (with songs such as “Horse with No Name” and “Ventura Highway”) is from the UK.~~

Daft Punk: Didn’t know for a long time that they are French.

    ~~7/11: It’s from Japan.~~

  11. Little kid me grew up with Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and was surprised to learn he was from Australia

  12. Andrew Lincoln from the Walking Dead. I didn’t find out until a couple of years ago that he was British.

  13. Rose Byrne. She’s played an American in so many American productions, and so convincingly, that I was shocked to learn she’s Australian.

  14. The guy who plays McNulty on the show The Wire (one of the greatest American shows ever made btw).

He nails the working class mid Atlantic / Baltimore accent so well. The show overall is hyper realistic.

Was shocked to hear an interview where his Welsh accent was so thick I could barely understand him.

  15. LEGOs. They are so beloved and ubiquitous in America that I always assumed they were invented here.

  16. The opposite of that – I was surprised to learn that Jimi Hendrix was American. I thought he was a Brit. What’s worse – he was a native of my hometown, Seattle.

  17. Johnny Lee Miller, who plays Jordan Chase on Dexter. I’d even seen him in Trainspotting and had no idea it was the same guy. He even has the most American name possible.

  18. Charlize Theron.

I come from a family full of immigrants and was just amazed she had no accent.
