  1. *California is a former pit village…*

Insert joke. True as well, except the settlements were created for gold miners, not coal.

  2. This is the first time I am hearing of it, and I have been to Scotland more than once before.

For what it’s worth, there are also some examples of the reverse, with Scottish place names in California. There is a town on the far north coast of California that is named Scotia, another town near Point Reyes (north of San Francisco) named Inverness, and a town near Santa Cruz named Ben Lomond.

There is also a town in Germany called Kalifornien.

  3. There’s probably a dozen towns in the US named California, so we wouldn’t have heard of one in Scotland, nor would it surprise us.

  4. California is the golden state. California, Scotland should be the golden village.

    Sunshine state is Florida’s nickname

  5. I live in Scotland, I’m actually about an hour away from this place and I’ve never heard of it
