All of my friends are in my life because they get something from me:
Emotional support, relationship advice, venting, an ear to listen
Free IT support (me fixing their shit for free, staying up til 2am often to do so)
Financial advice or tax time shit
Asking me to research something then spoon feed them the answers
Teaching their kids music for free, guitar, piano, drums

TL;DR

All I’ve ever wanted is a good friend and I’ve tried so hard to be a good friend to others but in return I get nothing. How do I set boundaries and make people start valuing me?

  1. My friend. The boundaries you need to set are around your own time and energy. Stop saying yes to all of this stuff, especially if you are not receiving reciprocal energy. You can’t “make” anyone else do anything, but you can make yourself put a stop to the people pleasing. You can make yourself stop investing in non-reciprocal relationships. Surround yourself with people that match the effort you put into the relationship.
