Sometimes I feel guilty about it because often my family members (I live about 700 miles away from the bulk of my family) take it as disrespect, or lack of importance since there’s usually quite the delay before hearing back from me.

I want to add, that I do respond to my wife right away, though she is absolutely the only person who I respond to right away.

  1. I do this. I treat texts like if they were emails, or at least how I treat emails. It’s very rare for me to reply to a text on the spot. I do that with whoever, even the person I like. I need to feel comfortable and focused to text.

Plus, I don’t have text notifications on on my phone. They are distracting and would be useless for me.

    Is this a rare behaviour?

  2. I respond as soon as I read a text 99% of the time. But most of them are simple questions from my wife or a client.

What kind of texts are you receiving that require a full day of mental preparation?

  3. It usually depends on the nature of the exchange.

Like if it’s joking around with a friend I’ll reply pretty fast.

If it’s something that requires coordination or scheduling or commitment, I can take a lot longer. I usually have to deal with:

    * Do I actually want to do this thing?
    * If not, how can I politely decline
    * If so, do I bring my wife or should I leave the kid with her? Or do we leave the kid with my parents?
    * Or I kinda just want to chill at home…

Sometimes within all those thoughts I fall into my daily routines and just kinda forgot I got the text at all too.

  4. Very much the case for me as well.

That being said, I always start overthinking when people don’t respond promptly to me. Did I say something wrong? Maybe they don’t like me? Etc.
