In high school, I was a new kid in a small-town and was an outcast. I didn’t know how to be the new kid. I would sit down and join in and interrupt people’s conversations before class. One girl called me socially awkward. Another said I was annoying. I was trying to be nice. I don’t do the interrupting anymore as an adult but really how weird was it? Would I make you uncomfortable?

  1. It does really depend. For example if I’m talking to a coworker and a customer joins in, I will think “mind your own business.” But if I’m talking to a customer and my coworker joins in, I will think, “what a pleasant customer, making our day better.” It’s never very weird though, it’s just kind of annoying if they intrude on our conversation.

I think groups are usually much more approachable. “Cool” girl friend groups are very unapproachable, don’t even bother trying. You can usually join a conversation if there’s a reason to. Like if there’s some people studying for an exam for a class you’re in, you can say “are y’all studying for _? Can I study with y’all?” Or if you hear a casual convo about something you’re interested in.

What you don’t wanna do is hover around awkwardly around people who are deep in convo about something else.
