Probably [Haaland](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erling_Haaland). He’s definitely the most successful Norwegian sportsperson at the moment, so he’s probably also the most popular. Personally, I don’t particularly like him.
Jaunas Vindegaard here in DK right now because the summer is over with a win in France
We actually have a competition every year called the [Sports Personality of the Year](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_Sports_Personality_of_the_Year_Award) award. 2022s award went to Beth Mead, one of the England women’s national football team. Given how well the team played in the World Cup and our general dislike for most of our successful sportsmen (you’ll always find the popularity of Lewis Hamilton or Andy Murray pretty 50/50), I’d probably say the 2022 result still stands. Happy to be proven wrong though.
Iga Świątek and Robert Lewandowski. Everybody knows them
I would say Armand Duplantis, currently World record holder in Pole Vault.
Probably Wout van Aert or Remco Evenepoel.
We have “sportspeople of the year” awards. Rooting for Luca Brecel this year (he’s World Champion, ffs!), but I know it’s just going to be one of the cyclists.
Hazard, KDB, Courtois or Lukaku basically.
Maybe Van Aert or Evenepoel. But I still think football is beating cycling, even in Belgium.
Probably still Roger Federer, even though his career is already over. Otherwise it’s probably a football (e.g. Yann Sommer) or hockey player (e.g. Roman Josi), depending on who you’re asking.
Edit: I forgot about skiing. Marco Odermatt and Lara Gut are quite popular as well.
I think Max Verstappen takes this one with a pretty big margin.
It’s hard to say for Austria. My guesses would be David Alaba (football), Marcel Hirscher (alpine skiing, retired), Stefan Kraft (ski jumping), and Dominic Thiem (tennis).
Cristiano Ronaldo has been the most popular athlete here in Portugal for almost 20 years now
Luka Dončič, Tadej Pogačar, Primož Roglič, Janja Garnbret… it depends on a season.
Don’t think there is a single sports person particularly standing out for Germany, not that there isn’t any the answer will just change depending on who you ask so
Ireland:
I would probably say The Irish Rugby team generally as there is hype building for the world cup in a few weeks
Maybe Johnny Sexton if you had to select an individual
For Bulgaria, it’s definitely a young chess player. She just finished second in the chess world cup.
It has to be Rubiales (all for the wrong reasons though).
I think Simona Halep in Ro, but she has some problems now.
Difficult to say. Names that come to mind are Iivo Niskanen, who is a cross country skier and an olympic gold medalist, Lauri Markkanen, a basketball player playing for the Utah Jazz who had his breakout season in 22-23 and is by far the best Finnish basketball player ever, and Kalle Rovanperä, rally driver who won the WRC title in 2022 and became the youngest champion ever, and he is leading this year’s championship.
There probably are other skiers I’m not thinking about, or track and field athletes. Just don’t follow those sports. Kerttu Niskanen and Wilma Murto are names I see often. In ice hockey I don’t think there is a player that has a ton of hype around them right now. Of course the NHL stars are always popular. Patrik Laine and the likes.
All and all, I don’t think there is a consensus *most* popular Finnish athlete right now.
At this very moment, with the ongoing world athletics championships, it has to be pole vaulter Wilma Murto. In a sea of disappointing performances from our athletics team, she’s the only one achieving good results. She won the bronze yesterday.
Arnold Schwarzenegger, probably for the next century too.
Right now? Probably Kylian Mbappé. People won’t shut the fuck up about him and his millions of euros.
In terms of active sportsperson, I would probably say Lewis Hamilton.
Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, Andy Murray, and Harry Kane are others that spring to mind. Maybe Ronnie O’Sullivan too. Gareth Bale and Wayne Rooney a few years ago would be there.
The winner of 2022 Sports(wo)man of the year was Ester Ledecká.
She’s the skier/snowboarder, who won 2020 Olympic gold in Super-G, after most televisions declared a winner and ended the live-stream, not expecting somebody remaining at the tail of the race can achieve anything.
Magnus Carlsen is pretty popular now, but probably still nothing compared to Haaland or even Ødegaard
Kristin Tattar, disc golf player currently.
Ott Tänak (rally) is also mentioned a lot everywhere.
I would say Arda Güler for males, he recently transferred to Real Madrid at age of 18. For females, I would say whole Turkish Women Volleyball team, they recently got Golden Medal at Nations League. I guess they are the world champion.
Kristaps Porziņģis, for sure. I’d argue he’s the biggest name sportsperson ever in Latvian sports. There were a few hockey players in the past that had nationwide and international recognition, not really anymore, our double Olympic BMX champion Štrombergs used to be really popular, but KP has been the name since he got drafted.
Andy Murray undoubtedly. He’s not the player he used to be but he’s still very popular in Scotland.
Giannis, especially cause he left early for the NBA and didn’t play for the big clubs of the country so he didn’t become hated by opponents’ fans as the other big football/basketball players. Racists tried to ridicule his case but fortunatelly people rallied for him very hard.

Miltos Tentoglou lately too. He just won Gold in long jump in the World Athletics (open) and is also the current Gold medal holder in both World and European championships (both open and closed) and also the Olympics. He is literally the current winner of all 5 of the big tournaments. He also has a loveble personality, which is definitely not the result of a well groomed PR image.
Probably Luka Modrić, Blanka Vlašić, Mirko Cro cop, Goran Ivanišević, Dražen Petrović, Janica Kostelić; one of them. Not sure who would be best known internationally.
Probably still Gheorghe Hagi. Football in Romania is kinda dead, his son (Ianis Hagi) is not even in Romania anymore, he’s playing for other teams.
Might also be David Popovici, a new swimmer that got a medal in the Olympics if I’m not mistaken? I know he won something big regardless.
But besides that, no one really, and no one really wants to do sports anymore.
Probably Grigor Dimitrov, a tennis player? He was with Nicole Scherzinger for a awhile.
Dimitar Berbatov, a football player. Hristo Stoichkov, though he’s an old guy now, but older people who like football might still recognize his name.
