Being there, and not adding more stress to their life.
Fix or replace the stuff he breaks.
Give him something to do. Help him feel useful and contribute. Don’t ask him to talk about it. Or act like he’s falling apart or something.
Give him some power tools and help him build/finish his deck.
Looks like a guy supporting his friend. Usually it’s one guy talking and the other guy staying quiet until he is done. Then the guy who was listening gives advice or is sympathetic to his friend telling him “that sucks man”
In my previous relationships, it meant showing an acceptable amount of vulnerability so she could fulfill her need to feel like a caretaker.
But my current partner I could totally cry over something stupid and she wouldn’t be disgusted. I’m keeping this one. It looks the same as supporting a friend.
