The recent hurricane sniped the edge of the area where my brother moved to. It seems to have brought mostly rain.
The discussion on American vs European universities was interesting. On that topic, how often do European professors that are in fields with commercial or military applications get jobs in industry? It seemed to be somewhat common here for professors here to do a stint in industry or government. Sometimes industry would also even sponsor research. There seems to be quite a few connections between the defense industry, civilian industry, and academia.
Today is the 100th anniversary of the Great Kanto Earthquake, which killed over 100,000 people in the Tokyo area.
What’s the most powerful earthquake you have ever experienced personally?
I lived in Japan for two years, pretty much on top of the major fault line near Tokyo, and felt a good number of earthquakes, though nothing enormous luckily….but some strong enough for books to fall off shelves, and several where everyone in the room immediately went under the tables for protection!
Driving through rough LA hoods and hearing really loud Mariachi music being blasted out of people’s car radios is never going to stop being hilarious to me. You’d expect Reggaeton or something wouldn’t you, but no.

I am super annoyed with my brain. Yesterday I saw a clickbaity Youtube thumbnail that was just a badly photoshopped image. I watch horror and I have seen real life injuries that were quite bad, but this super stupid not even remotely scary or gory image just got stuck in my head.
Send brain bleach, please.
