If you’re a Canadian seeing this post, feel free to chime in with what you call this animal in your province.

  1. Mountain Lion.

If you list any of the other names for it, we’ll know what you mean though.

  2. We call them “mountain lions,” but I personally also call them “cougars,” which is uncommon yet not unheard of.

  3. we don’t have a word. because those animals aren’t really in Ohio

I’d naturally say a cougar. but i could say Mountain Lion too.

  4. Before starting this thread, what I’ve gathered was this:
    – Washington, British Columbia — cougar
    – Vermont — catamount
    – Florida — panther
    – East (minus Florida & Vermont), Great Lakes — mountain lion, with cougar being a close second
    – West Coast (minus Washington), Great Plains, Rocky Mountains — mountain lion (usually shortened to just “lion”)

Edit: Last one seems to be a bit inaccurate, they’re usually called “lion” in the Rocky Mountains, but the full form “mountain lion” is used in the West Coast.

Edit 2: Ignore the above, “lion” is more specific, not sure exactly where it’s common.

  5. I’d say Mountain Lion or cougar. Old folks might say wampus cat, but I haven’t heard that one in a while.

  6. In the order of all the different names it has

    1. Mountain Lion

    2. Cougar

    3. Puma

    4. Panther

    5. Catamount

  7. That’s a cougar or mountain lion though here we usually say mountain lion.

    Also, rest in peace P22

  8. Panther used to be the most common in the east. I went to college in Tennessee and there were old black and white photos on the wall on the biology department showing pictures of folks in the news paper who had killed a “Panther”.

When their range shrunk down to just Florida in the Southeast, so did the term. Now that western Cougars are spreading east, they are bringing their western name with them. Pretty interesting.
