I have lived here my whole life and yet I’m drawing a blank. They’ll be here in a few weeks and I have no idea how to entertain them and also prevent them from returning to Finland and disparaging the UK. We’re based in the Northumberland.

  1. Pub lunch (Sunday roast).

    Posh afternoon tea somewhere twee.

Nice long walk in the countryside (if possible, combine with one of the above).

  2. Trip to the seaside for fish and chips (include crabbing if there are children). Afternoon tea. Trip to a decent museum/landmark (area dependent).

  3. Weatherspoons on a Saturday and start a fight. Go back Sunday for lunch with no recollection as to why you are barred.

  4. Pub lunch

A football match or a cricket game. They have football in Finland but the live experience of English football brings a lot of tourists over. Cricket is just a quintessential part of British summertime and something most Finns will have no concept of.

Some kind of big old castle

  5. Just tale them on a drive round Northumberland maybe lindisfarne, cragside Alnwick gardens. Then you have the roman stuff at the wall and the whole coast line.

  6. Alnwick castle or a national trust type property.

    Go for afternoon tea somewhere.

Fish and chips at the seaside.

Primark in the toon for an entirely different end of the British experience

It really depends on your in laws. My in laws would love a walk around a museum and then a cup of tea in a nice cafe but my parents are more the going to the pub type.

  7. Eat: Amble: Old Boathouse

    Fish and chips at Seahouses

    Visit: Bamburgh Castle, Holy Island

    Kielder Forest

If time, go to Edinburgh! If not, Newcastle (but removing any heavy clothes first).

  8. I’m seeing a couple of suggestions for Alnwick Gardens, if you go to Alnwick can I suggest taking them to Barter Books? Been years since I’ve been, but I love that place.

  9. At this point someone on this sub should just create a BudeTunnelBot to answer questions like this.

  12. Having lived in Finland and recently moved to Northumberland I would suggest taking them to a castle, there are very few decent ones there and we have loads of good ones!

A tasty Sunday lunch as others have mentioned and the Finnish (generally) love nature so any walks along the coast or the national park will make them happy.

  13. Plenty of great National Trust properties in the north-east for a nice walk and then lunch or a coffee in the cafe. Cragside, Gibside and Wallington are all worth a visit. Hadrian’s Wall and the various forts and museums are great for a day out.

  14. English Heritage or National Trust properties.

Country show / sheep dog trials.

    Proper afternoon tea.

    Fish & chip shop.

    Indian Restaurant.

    Cricket Match.

  15. Holy island but don’t tell them about the sea crossing. When you get there act like a Geordie Moses and part the sea.

  16. American here. Would love to know if my outside perspective from visiting the UK a few times but mostly from watching a ton of British mysteries has any merit. Go to the chippies. Smack a chav in the gob. Get some winkles by the seaside. Have a cuppa. Go on a walkabout. Have a few pints at the local. Have a Sunday joint with some Yorkshire pudding dipped in bisto gravy.

  17. OMG please take them to a British leisure centre sauna. That will be hilarious.

Finns will not disparage the UK, they are nice people full of salmiaki and sisu. They will like seeing the hypermarkets, shopping for TK Max cheap clothes etc. And they will like really old buildings, mansions that kind of thing. Oh, and food. Finnish cuisine is not the broadest. So take them to a decent restaurant or two.

  18. Pub lunch, afternoon tea, fish and chips at the seaside, visit a castle, walk in the countryside

  19. Monopoly the first night they arrive, and then nobody talks to each other for the rest of the trip.

  20. Sit with a cup of tea having a 3 hour conversation about the weather followed by a moan about foreigners and Europeans. Afterwards can go to the supermarket or anywhere and spend queue up while being over polite to everyone . Remember not to be direct in any answers and never under any circumstances tell the truth! Skirt round your opinions .

  21. Bamburgh castle, Alnwick gardens. Durham. Colemans fish restaurant, Seaton Delaval Hall. Betty’s Tea Rooms, Cragside Hall. Any premier league football. There’s things out there
