Hello, 8-10 years ago I had a job in a very small company, about 4 employees in total including the manager. There 1 was employee I had gotten close to, but we haven’t talked since then. Also since then, the company has been bought out by another company. Fast forward to today, I’m in a position where the job I want will require contact info from people in all aspects in my life for the last 10 years, and I will be thoroughly invested by the FBI. Is it appropriate for me to get in contact with the employee I had gotten close to back then just to ask for a reference? And then to ask for her contact information despite having a family now. Thanks

  1. Absolutely! There is nothing wrong with reaching out for a reference. Just make sure to keep it as professional as possible.

  2. I always feel flattered when people ask me me for recommendations or a reference. Totally appropriate.
