  1. Chemist. I’m working as a night porter while I finish off my electronic engineering degree. 2 different visions.

  2. Always wanted to join/retire from the Navy. Joined, got hurt at the end of my second tour. 6 months in the hospital. Did many odd jobs afterwards until I discovered plumbing. Paid very well and now retired.

  3. I wanted to work at Legoland.

I clean dinosaur fossils for a private company, I enjoy it and I’m lucky to have the job I do

  4. A director and writer. I’m a video editor now and I really enjoy it. Still young so writing or directing isn’t off the table.

  5. I wanted to be a veterinarian. But I was a dumb kid and new it. So I joined the uscg. Now that I’m out, I’ve been studying bio and working towards a medical career. I worked a few odd jobs in-between, one of which was a veterinary assistant. This put me off being a veterinarian pretty hard.

  6. When I was younger, I wanted to be an astronaut. Now I’m a software engineer and pretty satisfied with what I do. If it was guaranteed, I’d probably be writing music or exploring the outdoors.

  7. i grew up with my family in the trades so i learned very quickly its very good money. so my “dream job” bounced around alot as i learned about different trades, lately its been pipe welder and currently im a pipefitter, its fun 8/10 i enjoy hard work

  8. I was interested in flying airplanes as a kid. Am a jet pilot right now. Loving every minute of it.

  9. I wanted to be a mechanic. now I’m a truck driver. never even tried to be a mechanic

  10. Was obsessed with being a firefighter when I was a kid. My mom would buy me every educational fire VHS and I also loved Backdraft.

Went to school for Electrical Engineering, and work as a software engineer.

  11. I took an aptitude test in high school that said I was best suited to be a producer or director of films. I started an associates in radio, television, and filmed but never finished. I then joined the army, had a family and earned an associates in air conditioning. I now work on air conditioners.

  12. I was a stupid kid, at one point I wanted to be a fire truck. Not a firefighter, the truck they drove in.

More realistically I wanted to be a vet or dog breeder, but it fell off and I ended up in computer science.

Currently a software engineer, I like my work but hate my job. Trying to find a new company right now.

  13. Wanted to be a cook, or a machinist, or a welder or other metal fabrication trade. Worked as a cook right out of high school, moved out of my parents house, had a blast for a few years, then woke up one day hating the life. Went to school for engineering, have worked 27 years in engineering and quality roles, and I’m really happy with both careers.

  14. I wanted to be a WWE Wrestler as a kid and teenager and because I knew it was staged. I thought it wasn’t dangerous at all.

Then I saw the real risks that could happen and how many surgeries and Injuries the wrestlers still deal with and realised i no longer want to be one.

That’s my dream job down the drain.

I currently work in retail and its become a very comfortable comfort zone and I’m seriously starting to think about leaving it and pursuing a better job because I’m nearing 30 now and I need to stop putting it off. Something IT related I guess. I’m gonna have to seriously think about it

  15. I tried the military route, Army then Air Force. Got discharged for smoking weed (it’s not legal here in my country).

I went on to discover youth work, and for the most part I love it. I often go mountain biking, play basketball, play video games etc. It’s like being paid to be a big brother for young kids with horrible families. The biggest negative is it can be quite draining since most kids have challenging behaviours.

  16. Doctor. Specifically general medicine.

Now? I’m a manufacturing engineer working in aerospace/defense.

Some days are better than others but I can afford to take care of me and the wife. I consider myself very fortunate and blessed.

  17. I wanted to be a movie director after watching Star Wars and all those behind the scenes stuff that came with the dvds. now I work in supply chain and I do enjoy the work and the company I’m with. Not the most exciting company to work supply chain in but hoping to eventually work in the movie industry or just in entertainment to some capacity even if its just in corporate settings.

  18. Wanted to be an artist. Have always been an artist in hindsight. I am satisfied with the job, though I would love to get paid for it

  19. I wanted to be an author when I was younger (Like high school)

I am now a construction worker and university student

I actually like construction but hate the culture and the personalities it produces

I write a little but I need to get my shit together and work on my novel and poetry collection

  20. At first I wanted to work in IT, got some certs in highschool, started working in IT and I hated it… went to college to do programming, loved it, but didn’t like being told what to program and realized I didn’t want a desk job, so I dropped out. Bounced around doing temp work till my mid twenties, then went back to college and got an associates.

Now I’m a controls technician and do maintenance on automated industrial equipment. I love what I do now and I’m really glad I pushed myself to get here, because I was spiralling and going nowhere… and now I’m almost making six figures after my second year in my career.

  21. I wanted to be a nuclear engineer and combine a nuclear power plant with a nuclear waste power plant. My idea was that since the nuclear waste power plant was just as expensive as a nuclear power plant but had less output (because it’s extracting the nuclear energy from the waste from nuclear power plants), and they millionaires wouldn’t want to spend more money on that when they could just buy a power plant, that I could combine the two into one power plant that only leaves the materials the radioactive material merged with behind. I was hoping that by combining the two it would make it cheaper and more efficient so it would actually be viable in our society.

Long story short I got brain damage and I can’t handle the math that’s required to do that anymore. Long division in my head? I got you, but finding the half life of nuclear energy is a whole other ball park that I’m not confident with anymore.

Now I’m a dishwasher at a 4 star restaurant and training to become a chef. I like my job, but I still wish I had the brain power to do my original plan…. it’s a dream I’ll never forget, and I hope that one day someone brings it to fruition.

  22. I actively tried to be a Paramedic my younger days and pursued it all the way till college. But teacher quit halfway through and I had not been trained and educated enough to pass the test. So after failing college I gave up on any dream jobs and just work. Now security at a hospital.

  23. I wanted to be an archeologist as a kid. Now like half the people in this post, i work in IT. I love it and hate it at the same time

  24. When I was in high school I wanted to be an optometrist.

I currently work as a retail manager.

No I’m not satisfied currently, just working at this job until I can resume my studies. I plan to eventually land a job in online marketing.

  25. Wanted to be a cop so I could help people and put the bad guys away…. Now I build shit for the government. I love the job I have now. Every once in a while I see myself thinking of being a cop still, but the job I’m at now if I keep it up I’ll be making way more then a cop, also less bullshit I have to deal with the job I have now.

  26. Grew up listening to WWII stories from gramps, so I always played soldier.

Ended up with a couple of degrees and work in the public service, but I started by concurrently putting nearly 15 years into the army reserve so I guess it worked out

  27. When I was younger I wanted to be a cop (lol) helping people. I worked in law enforcement for a few years and decided the system isn’t there to help people, so now I make boatloads of money in the seafood industry and no stress.

  28. I wanted to study animals like Marty Stouffer in Wild America. Not the movie but the program on PBS. Studied Botany anf Biology in college. Grew up in 4H and FFA.
Started learning 3.11 and DOS and ended up in IT when i found out Biologists get paid shit and global warming is depressing. The loss of wild habitat in CO is extreme and its a real shame.
So I as well as many others on here it appears, settled for a career in IT. I have been in the industry 25 years. Finally have a good job after 20 years of shit sys admin jobs. I hate IT and would love to be in the Rockies studying environments and how different species interact.
I go up pretty much every weekend and fish but it is not the same.
I cant wait to retire and get some land in the mountains and grow plants, have animals and enjoy the mountains

  29. I never knew what I wanted to do, then one day a legendary animator came to a college class of mine and talked about animation. So then I started practicing animation. That was 11 years ago. Now I’ve worked at dozens of studios on a number of films and shows. I also teach and mentor aspiring animators, I truly love it.

  30. Depends on *how* younger. When I started out I was in IT, but the whole “do what you like as a hobby thing” pretty well got ruined and got totally unsatisfied with it between the negative experience and all the problems that . If I had all the money I needed and a way to get it out so people read it, I’d love to do writing (blogs, books, etc) and maybe a little speech giving too along with that (you write speeches and stuff, anyway…). Problem is if you throw a lot of stress on anything it just gets pretty unappetizing. It’s pretty hard too, I understand, to pick back up whatever love you had of doing something.

  31. That’s the story of my life, recently being done with my studies.

Started with medical, then science, to end up in finances.

I really liked all the stuff I did, down to the current one, but it’s more a matter of the field choosing me than me choosing the field.

  32. I wanted to work in video game development in level creation or 3D modelling. Ended up doing computer drafting. Kinda similar I guess.

  33. I wanted to be a CG artist working for Pixar or Nintendo or something. Those were my inspirations and I did it for many years as a hobby but couldn’t make any worthwhile money off it. Since I had no plan B I’m now a waiter and I fucking hate it.

  34. When I was 10, I wanted to become an architect. My father has a friend who has his own firm, and was inspired by him. I’ve been working for him for the last 8years as a building engineer, gave up on becoming an architect, I realised it doesn’t suit me. But I really like to be a building engineer!

  35. I had huge dreams of being in a band, touring and playing music for a living. Never came close.

I’m an electrician now and I love it.

  36. I wanted to be a pilot growing up

    Now I’m a casino manager

I don’t know if I’m “satisfied”, but I do know growing up poor I never pictured myself as the boss wearing a suit to work. All things considered I’m very grateful and fortunate
