I mean how long do you want this list

  2. Shenandoah is the most American song. Also the most beautiful American song. Go listen to Keith Jarrett play it and then argue with me.

  3. This Land is Your Land is, absolutely the most American song. All others stem from this.

Ask Springsteen or Mellencamp what they think of Woody, and they’ll tell you there is no more American songwriter than him.

  4. Probably a weird one because of how it got to this situation, but Seven Nation Army.

Yes it was first introduced to stadiums by a Belgian soccer team, but it’s a song that was written here and to this day you will hear in any of the big four stadiums.

  5. I’m gonna throw a curveball here and say anything from the soundtrack to the cartoon “Over The Garden Wall”. It captures pre-WWII American folk culture very well (as does the show itself, which you should totally go and watch).

  6. The Old Town Road remix obviously.

A rap song with a country singer on the hook that samples an (industrial) rock song? There’s a reason why it was the longest running number one hit in Billboard history.

  7. I have a few: *The Battle Cry of Freedom* by George Root, one of the most famous songs from the Civil War. I [particularly love this adaptation of it](https://youtu.be/cGfRWyAG-Z4?si=6s471I0Lz8wwry0X)

[*There She Stands*](https://youtu.be/8aZZquCQm8A?si=fqNOXnrv5uos9Pj8)-Michael W. Smith(2002)-While he is a Christian singer so he isn’t for everyone, this isn’t a religious song(for those who aren’t) and is an amazing tribute to American resilience. Also, since this is a song about 9/11, it’s been on my mind a lot the last couple days.

Also, *Shenandoah* and *Country Roads*, as others have mentioned.

  8. When I think of American music, my mind always goes to big band jazz and swing. I guess it’s because it was the soundtrack to those past WW2 years when America really came into its own, it was the sound of a superpower being born.
