Malay is my L1 and English L2. I consume a lot of American content and I’ve noticed that my Malay speech style leans toward American English than the typical Malay speech style.

Has this happened to any of you whose mother tongue isn’t English?

  1. It mostly happens when I talk about work-related things (like explaining my work projects to my family), because it uses a lot of terminology that I only learned in English.
