Is there a particular quote that you abide by or that has deeply influenced you?
To kick things off, here’s mine, which may be somewhat simple but guides my life:
“You miss every shot you don’t take”
or
“The man that loves walking, will walk further than the man who loves the destination”

  1. *“Maybe that’s enlightenment enough: to know that there is no final resting place of the mind; no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom…is realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go.”*

    -Anthony Bourdain

  2. “The past is the past, all we can do is live with it”

This one is a bit of a double edged blade, but it helps hammer home the point that its okay to let things go.

  3. “Of all the preposterous assumptions of humanity over humanity, nothing exceeds the criticisms made on the habits of the poor by the well-housed, well-warmed, and well-fed.”
~~ Herman Melville, Billy Budd & Other Stories (1924 )

  4. “Of all the costs of freedom, allowing others to believe differently than you is the most difficult to pay”

I have this hanging on the back of my entry door. I read it every morning before work to remind myself that other people have the right to their beliefs, no matter how much I might disagree with it.

  5. “Of all evil I deem you capable: Therefore I want good from you. Verily, I have often laughed at the weaklings who thought themselves good because they had no claws.” – Nietzsche.

Every “nice guy” needs to read this quote

  6. Far better it is to have a stout heart always, and suffer ones share of evils, then be ever fearing what may come.

  7. How ridiculous and how strange to be surprised at anything which happens in life.

    -Marcus Aurelius

  8. “Never die easy. Why run out of bounds and die easy? Make that linebacker pay. It carries into all facets of your life. It’s okay to lose, to die, but don’t die without trying, without giving it your best.” -Walter Payton

It ties into the military concept of *violence of action.* Doing something harder, faster, and more deliberately than the other guy can make up for a lot of other deficiencies and it applies to everything.

  9. “Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘Press On!’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.”

    – Calvin Coolidge

  10. Not sure why, but it’s one of only quotes I always remember and I dont even know who it’s attributed to:

“If you wear a mask for long enough, you eventually forget who the person is underneath.”

The quote is meant to mean that if you pretend to be something you’re not, you’ll eventually lose your sense of identity. I took it to mean that if you pretend to be who you want to be, you will eventually be that person. So if you have some character flaw you want changed, pretend you’re someone without that flaw. Want to be more confident? Act confident. Want to be more productive? Pretend like you are. Eventually your pretending becomes the norm.

It sounds a little silly when it’s spelled out like that, but I genuinely feel like the mindset of being able to change some of my personal flaws has helped me overcome many of them and changed me for the better.

  11. “It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life.”

  12. I abide by this quote.

“If to be truthful is to be cruel, then lying must surely be an act of kindness, and so kindness is a lie.”
    :- hikigaya hachiman
    Or

Whoever is delighted in solitude is either a wild beast or a god.
    :- Aristotle
I am no God or a wild beast, tho.

  13. I always loved these two

“Practice makes perfect, but if what you practice is shit, you’ll only ever be perfect at doing shit” – my taekwondo master. It’s not enough to just try or do your best. You have to actually make sure you’re doing it the right way too, or else you’ll never improve

“It’s not gonna matter in 100 years when you’re dead. Stop worrying about it today” – my grandpa. As I’ve gotten older I’ve appreciated this advice more. Stop sweating the small stuff, because it’ll really only ever matter in the moment
