Am I insane? I often think people are trying to manipulate me or make me think or feel a certain thing when they talk to me. I don’t take people at face value.

For example, if someone gives me a compliment, I think they’re trying to make me think differently about myself or they’re trying to ingratiate themselves to me. Another example; someone notices I came home a couple days earlier than I was supposed to from a trip. Instead of directly ASKING what they want to know (why I’m back early) they manipulatively try to start a conversation about it to get the information (“oh hey man, you’re back early!”) If you’re asking a question, ask the fucking question.

I also think most people are “acting” or “performing” a lot of the time. I see someone making jokes and being charismatic and I think “they want to be liked, they’re trying to make people like them, I don’t trust them.”

I honestly don’t think I’m autistic, I feel pretty good at reading people. I’m concerned that I have some kind of personality disorder.

  1. Hello! I do not think that you’re insane. What I do think is that you believe that everyone has an ulterior motive regardless if your interaction with them is positive or negative. Someone says something and your mind gets to work on the analysis of why person(s) X said or did whatever. Perhaps instead of not taking people at face value, you should try partially trusting or believing what they say until they give you a reason not to do so. That way you might be able to tell who is a genuine individual and who is not.
