What would you consider “formal cocktail attire” for a wedding?

  1. I think this generally means black tie, which basically means a tux, but it could also mean formal, which means men’s suits could be permitted with or without tie. You should probably ask the couple. A lot of times people don’t know what they’re asking for because we’re a much more casual society but use outdated terminology.

  2. Formal Cocktail attire for men would be a two- or three-piece suit with a formal dress shirt, and a bowtie. (Basically, a step below black-tie, which would be a Tux). Casual cocktail attire for men would be your normal casual business suits, a casual shirt w/ Button cuff, and a tie.

Younger men (especially in America) literally have no idea how to dress themselves and think a suit and tie is the answer to everything (as the comments section here would indicate). I would check in with the bride and get clarification on what she has in mind.

Also, if you are talking a date, what you wear is highly dependent on how formal her dress is.
