Hi everyone, I know that there are quite a few posts about washing machines, but I was hoping to get some advice as my main concern is getting one that is as quiet as possible.

Also, I’m not sure what the better choice is between for example a condenser or heat pump (or whatever else there is, I have so far seen those two options).

I know a separate dryer is usually better, but I am just moving into a rented house and can’t really justify buying two separate machines. Drying on the line is an option, but I do think that I still need to have the option to use a dryer on occasion, so that’s what I’m looking for.

Regarding specs, I’m not too fussy. Some kind of quick mode would be nice, and something for delicates maybe. I would love to get away with spending as little as possible while not sacrificing too much in quality and longevity, but if it’s silent(ish) I’m pretty much game. Ideally I could get away with up to £600, so the recommendations like a Miele are pretty much out of the question.

If anyone has advice on where to maybe get a better deal that would also be very appreciated! (I doubt it, but if there are places that do a student discount I should qualify as a postgrad.)

Thanks in advance for any recommendations

  1. I bought a Haier after my brother in law was positive about his.

They’re an air conditioning company so I expected them to do a decent heat pump.

The only thing I don’t like is the style which is a bit futuristic

  2. Being in the kitchen industry I’d recommend Haier or Bosch as a good quality reliable brand for your washer dryer

Condenser dryers are faster but less energy effecient as they run at a higher heat, heat pumps tend to be slower drying but more energy effecient

I’d suggest John lewis as they give better warranties or AO for variety

  3. Washer-dryers tend to be mediocre dryers (with rather less capacity than the wash cycle) that will never get your clothes actually dry. They wash clothes just fine.

They also break down a lot, mainly because the dryer mechanism is attached to the drum and is shaked around by the drum every spin cycle. Eventually this breaks something in the drying mechanism.

However, they will decrease the time you need to hang the clothes out to get them dry.

I strongly recommend a separate dryer. If you still want to get a washer-dryer, then I recommend Bosch based on general build quality and very good experiences with separate washers and dryers. I also recommend an extended warranty (one of the few things I recommend such a warranty for).

All washer-dryers are condenser units and drain the condensate automatically. Very few have heat pumps, so their wash-dry cycle efficiency is not high.

  4. I bought a Hotpoint washer dryer 10 years back. Worst purchase I ever made. Took ages to dry clothes and completely failed after 1.5 years. All my appliances are Bosch now and they last a long time like at least 8 years and dishwasher 15 years old and still going strong. So I would go for separate washing machine. Drying on the line works to an extent even in winter. For just 1 person you may get away with not having a dryer.
