I am 23 and i currently work under construction (Joiner) Manufacturing firedoors, but ive always had a urge to push into a more computer based roll. just wonder what type of jobs are out there for someone with little to no job experience as a place to gain experience, i have an A\* for basic microsoft programmes (word, excel etc) and i have worked under lloyds on telephony, but i wish to avoid customer contact (besides emails/livechat) would be looking to avoid an agency role as i currently rent a property and have never liked the idea they can terminate you whenever. a relative of mine works for legal & general under the finance department. and another as a data entry. any tips or suggestions would be ideal, and also where to look.

Thank you!

  1. I know you said you didn’t like agency roles but they are generally a good route in to admin. Otherwise it’s a lot of endless applying

  2. Most agencies look to place people in permanent roles as well as offering temporary services. As long as you make them aware you are only looking for permanent placement then many will be happy to circulate your name and CV as they make their money from finder’s fees.

As for finding a job, you are best off going on Indeed or similar and seeing what is out there that matches your salary expectations. I jumped from warehouse work to an admin position as an internal progression and while it took me a while to adjust, I wouldn’t go back now.

Your reluctance to talk to customers may be a hold back for some roles. That is the part I was most worried about but the more you do it, the easier it gets and the more skills you develop. That being said, some roles are not customer-facing so you might get lucky.

As long as you can manage on an entry-level salary, your best bet is to keep applying even if you don’t feel you are entirely qualified. Don’t second-guess what people are looking for and remember that the worst they can say is no.

  3. You could try your local council’s website for admin jobs. Same for NHS. A lot of people I know who work in admin started as a band 2 or bank admin in the NHS
