I am working at a new job in the office for two months. We have our own cabinets for 2-3 people. I work with my colleague (different gendersl) and I only know her name and we each day say hello and goodbye to each other. I don’t really care about my colleague but should I say something more than just hello and goodbye. Btw my position is higher than her even if I am a new worker. We work in completely silence

Before I used to work in the fields with my colleague (same gender) we also almost didn’t speak about life but we used to speak about work in general.

  1. You can judge this by their response. If you say “how’s your day been” on the way out the door, if they give you a one word answer “good” respond in kind.

If they give you a 5 minute run down of your day, then suggest to them that you meet 10 minutes before clock off and take turns debriefing your day.

  2. It depends on what you want to achieve.
By the sounds of it, she doesn’t make much of an effort of talking more than hello and goodbye either and seems fine with that.
Do you feel awkward about this?
