I started a new job. Someone from my orientation cohort messaged me saying sorry they missed my message but I DIDN’T MESSAGE THAT PERSON????? I asked in group chat how’s everyone doing with their first day and did they figure out their work schedules etc. this person DM me saying that I reached out to them?
Super confused. Super anxious. I never spoke with anyone from my cohort in private and I barely seen this person talk during orientation. How cool should I be? I don’t know if I like this person cuz they be giving strange vibes sometimes but I just found out this person is working in my division but different department.
I’m sure I’m overthinking this but what to do with this awkward situation? Do I tell the person they misunderstood and that I did not specifically talked to just him?
Oh, also. Department director cc’ed everyone in my team on weekly work updates (including how she’ll be busy with her maybe cat’s/son’s birthday in the closing message???) and welcomed me but I don’t know if I should be reply all and say thank you for welcoming me, or just reply the director and thank her in private. Whats the grown up social approach to this?
At this point, I’m not sure if I’m the socially awkward one anymore.

They are probably referring to your message in the group chat. I wouldn’t worry they are likely feeling as nervous as you and just want to make friends.
