Doing a sport that helps develop your physical abilities in ways that your primary sport does not.
In high school I played ultimate frisbee, a lot of sprinting/stopping/directional changes. In our “off season” I ran cross country, constant steady pace without breaking.
Here’s a recursive one: Swimming makes great cross training for running because it gives the joints a break while engaging more/different muscles. Running makes great cross training for swimming because it builds aerobic capacity and endurance.
