I know nothing of lawn care… Do I fertilize? I have bare spots and dead spots, how do I fix those, what do I do in winter vs spring, I know nothing, and I want to stand on my steps in my white New balances and have other dads nod at me with a sneer of envy… Where do I start?

Northern Ohio, btw

  1. Plant some tomatoes, cucumber and potatoes so the water and time you spend on it has a positive feedback. You enjoy your own vegetables and neighbors will be jealous.

PS: don’t look strange at imperfect vegetables they are perfectly tasty.

  2. Get yourself some good ole bluegrass or in Australia we have what’s called cooch. A hardy grass that looks great all year round.

    Or invest in some turf.

  3. If you already have the correct pair of new balance then the lawn knowledge will come automatically, if you don’t have it after a month or so you got the wrong sneakers. When you get the right pair you should notice your credit score go up as well. Mine went up to the 800’s when I got mine.

  4. Kill your lawn and turn it into a permaculture garden which supplies delicious produce for the entire neighborhood

  5. Plant some stuff to attract insects. Lawns are terrible for local ecology.

  6. I’m in Texas. I knew nothing of lawns when I started either. My dad gifted me the farmer’s almanac. That thing has got me through a lot of basics for lawn care. It’ll give you tips for veggies that flower and stuff as well.l for garden bushes. We used rosemary for wasp control and as well cooking and planted cantaloupe on trellis lines for shade. The fruit is way juicier and tastier than store bought to boot.

  7. You probably have tall fescue blend grass, so jack up the mower to the highest or second highest cut height, make sure you have sharp blades, start mowing twice a week, fertilize every 4-6 weeks.

Now is the time to put down some fungicide as a preventative in southern Ohio, so probably in another couple weeks for you. Grub preventative as well.

Other than that, use some over the counter weed control until this fall when you’ll overseed the lawn.

  8. You dont? Why do you need to brag about your yard ? Craving attention and validation ?

  9. Start outside in. Making sure your trim and edges are easy to maintain and care for will make the lawn easier to care for. Flower beds cleared and clean. No weird objects leaning against fence or house preventing weeding.

After that slowly start caring for the grass.

And expect it to take a few years. It wont happen in one summer unless you got thousands of dollars to just replace stuff.
