So it’s finally happened, the house we bought in summer still has a humidity of around 80%. Opened my son’s curtains this morning to find the windows dripping and mould already forming on the window frames.

We are in a 3 bedroomed (2 double, 1 between a double and a single) house built in 2006. Looking for a decent humidifier. Looking around the £200 mark but will pay more for something worth it. It would be used primarily for damp as we have a condensed tumble dryer which is quite efficient.

House is 36.7sq meters.

ETA: Where in the house would you put it? Downstairs doesn’t seem to be bad.

  1. [meaco](https://www.meaco.com/collections/home-dehumidifiers) are great. I have the 12L just outside our bathroom and it makes a big difference in the fall / winter. 20L is probably a better size for a whole house issue though (oversizing rather than undersizing will save on running costs).

Place it wherever is highest humidity first, then place it near the largest source of moisture in your house. You may want to check that you don’t have a leak in the attic etc.

  2. We have the BLYSS WDH-316DB 16LTR DEHUMIDIFIER from Screwfix. Granted we only use it in one room though, so don’t know how well it will handle a whole house. It’s really good though, and has the option of piping water out so you never have to empty it.

  3. I’ve had two meaco dehumidifiers, the most expensive models, and they both died within a couple years. I wouldn’t touch them again, I’d go with someone reputable like De Longhi

  4. Get a good desiccant one anyway.

Ignore the people in here talking about opening windows in winter, they always seem to show up in these threads. Dehumidifier gets rid of damp while keeping the heat in.

  5. I have two Meacos. A condenser one (ABC 10L) and a desiccant one (DD8L).

My needs for one are somewhat beyond the standard household (partner spends his working day on the water, and we’re both keen kayakers, so we have a lot of wet kit to dry and a room basically dedicated to it, although I do also use them for drying clothes and move around the house if a room seems damp).

The condenser one I’ve had since 2018 and it’s still going strong, and is used most days for 9 months of the year. The desiccant one is only a couple of years old and still in perfect condition, but costs at least twice as much to run so I’d only recommend if you need it for a space that gets quite cold (operates at lower temps, originally bought for the garage).

  6. Another shout for the Arete. Got the 25L version, made such a difference to our house, our bedroom especially.

Also use it in my office when drying clothes. Put 2 maidens in there with the Arete, close the door and in the morning everything is dry. Really cannot recommend it enough.

  7. Bought this last year. It’s been great throughout the colder months, no more dripping windows, no more damp in the bathroom, clothes actually dry indoors. This time of year I empty it everyday, or every other. It has a clothes drying mode, a timer, you can set what humidity to aim for, it’s been a very solid unit, it’s sat permanently plugged in, wouldn’t be without it now.
