What do you and your spouse do for your first wedding anniversary? How did you celebrate it together?

  1. We haven’t hit our one year yet, but we’ll be on our honeymoon! We took a delayed honeymoon to overlap our 1yr anniversary. I anticipate a weekend away type trip every year for future anniversaries with maybe a small gift.

  2. I got lucky… 10 days in San Francisco mostly on the company dime.

We lived on the East Coast. My employer at the time was doing a nationwide rollout of software for a customer. I was the trainer. The two California sessions were going to start the day after my first anniversary so I told them “find someone else”. They said “no problem”. It turned out to be a problem.

The original plan was sessions in Dallas and Chicago the week before, fly home, then fly out to San Francisco. However, I found that if I went straight from Chicago to San Francisco and then home, the total airfare dropped by over $1,000. So, I made a deal.

New trip would have me go to San Francisco from Chicago and I wouldn’t fly home until the Sunday after the last training session. The company would cover the first weekend of hotels (client was covering the training hotels), I would pay for the last weekend. Company would cover the car rental and meals for the entire trip. I would pay for my wife to fly to Chicago to meet me at the airport and then we’d continue the trip together.

The first weekend was great, doing all the touristy things in and around San Francisco and staying downtown. That Monday was our anniversary and we capped the day with a meal at a four star restaurant. We transferred across the bay to Walnut Creek for the training sessions on Tuesday. The training I had to do was two full day sessions and two half day sessions. The client loved us at that point and invited my wife and I to join everyone for dinner the first night but we would do things on our own after that. All total, pretty much a 10 day working vacation.

For our 5th, I hired a limo (town car), took her to NYC for a high end steak dinner and one of the last showings of Cats on Broadway. For our 10th, we went to Provincetown, MA for the weekend. And that was probably the last of our extravagant anniversaries because kids.

Our 15th was at the baseball fields watching our youngest play in his league championships. Our 20th was spent apart as I was driving our oldest 1200 miles to college for freshman orientation. Our 25th was during the pandemic so our plans to go to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls for a couple days got cancelled. Not quite sure what we’re going to do for our 30th as both kids are out of college. I’ve still got a couple years to figure that one out though.

  3. We got married in a park, so we went back their on our first anniversary and had a picnic dinner under the trees where we had our ceremony. We do a picnic there on/near our anniversary every year.
