My partner and I have been together for a little less than a year but it seems like this could be a long-term relationship.

My partner’s family immigrated to the United States before he was born. Although they have learned English during their time here, they prefer their native language. If I want to communicate and fit in with him and his family in the long run, knowing some of the language would really help.

I don’t want to come across as desperate or crazy. Should I wait until we’re more serious (engaged or some other signifier) or just start now?

  1. What language is it? Someone languages like Spanish or French are going to be way easier for an English speaker to learn than others, but motivation is a huge factor so even a hard one can be learned.
Also, even if things don’t work out, having studied a language opens up a lot of stuff and can be fun / interesting.
If you are considering long term I highly recommend it. And if things don’t work out, you will have experience learning a language and this can open you up to dating lots of people who may not speak English very well if you decide to pursue languages in the future
