What core memory changed you permanently, and why?

  1. I would say the morning my dad died in the hospital. Due to COVID regulations, we weren’t by his side when he passed away. My mom was devastated. She truly loved him despite years of him being hard to deal with due to cancer. I remember her sobbing and saying that despite everything she wished he was still alive.

  2. Final Fantasy 8 showed me how being a hero means doing the right thing, even if nobody else does.

  3. According to my mom, and everything I know about him corroborates that, my dad said, just before he left her with 3 kids, that we were a hindrance in his life.

I’ve carried that with me ever since.

  4. As a volunteer firefighter picking out of the bones of two children that died in a house fire and putting them into a bag.
