So I’ve been talking with a new guy and I could ask him like the most simple or basic thing, and he might answer followed by “why do you ask”. This or similar happened at least twice over the few days we’ve been talking. I’m finding it really irritating and thinking to not keep talking with him if he keeps that up. It’s not that I don’t want to answer why, though for something so basic like “what subjects are you studying” he’s like “you wanna study it” instead of answering the question. Then we were talking about AI Chatbots, he said he uses it to help with studies. So I asked if he’s got a list of prompts, him “why do you ask?” We are both in our 20s, so we aren’t teenagers, PS. though him communicating like that makes me feel a bit like that’s what his level of communication is at. I’m not saying that in a mean way, it just comes across to me as such.

It makes me feel like he’s so defensive or something and like doesn’t wanna talk with me, even though he’s the one initiating conversations so far. While I’m reciprocating, asking questions and trying to be engaging. The first time I was just like “sorry for asking, I was just trying to get to know you.” He apologized and answered my question. Then similar thing is happening now.

I’m not really sure if there’s even anything for me to communicate with him about as I don’t think he’s in the wrong or doing it out of malice. Though I feel like maybe we just don’t really connect for some reason and can’t talk with each other easily. So I might have to stop talking with him. Though has anyone else ran into an issue like this and how did that go in your situation?

  1. He sounds like a terrible conversationalist all around. You could try to give him a chance in person and see if he’s any better, but tbh I would just call it here and quit talking to him. It’s not worth it to always be the one carrying the conversation.

  2. I only respond with “Why do you ask” whenever I don’t want someone talking to me or if they ask a really personal question.
