I’m just curious if people like baseball teams for other reasons than it being the place they currently live. Is it the baseball team based on the state you grew up in, or is it because your family likes the team? Or do you just like city or the team’s symbol?

  1. Grew up in Milwaukee, but my grandfather was from the Southside of Chicago and lived near a Sox farm club when I was growing up. When the Brewers changed leagues I decided it was okay to like both.

  2. I grew up near them, and I have good memories of me and my dad taking the train up the peninsula to see them play by the bay.

  3. I’m a Braves fan because they were alllllllways on tv (tbs) when I was a kid, I watched more Braves baseball than the closest team, the Rockies.

  4. My family is super into baseball and some of my earliest memories are listening to their games on a transistor radio at my grandparents’ house while sitting on the porch in the summer playing cards and then going to the stadium for the first time and seeing an impossibly green field and the home team’s glowing white uniforms. They won the World Series when I was 7 and nothing was more important to me.

  5. I live in Chicago, but I’m an oddball lifetime North Sider/North Suburban who became a White Sox fan.

My parents didn’t grow up in the area so they didn’t really have strong allegiances to any team.

I did have some friends who were Sox fans because their dads grew up in the South Side, and I really didn’t like this kid in my class’s dorky Cubs painters cap he wore every day. So I became a Sox fan at 7…

  6. I’m not sure I do like my favorite baseball team, as they have made some annoying choices of late. But they are my hometown team.

  7. if i had the prostate of a younger man i could piss on the stadium from my front porch with 12 beers in my bladder

  8. I grew up watching the Braves, I grew up in the Braves viewing area. ATL is a cool city and having a baseball icon play for the team is great

  9. Grew up in Indianapolis so we didn’t have an MLB team so I never really followed baseball. If I had to pick I’d say the White Sox just because I went to several games in Chicago because I lived not too far from the stadium and there were reasonably cheap tickets.

  10. I grew up watching the team on WWOR channel 9, when they had Ralph Kiner and Tim McCarver. I also still have the kid size Mets cap from my grandfather, who was the big baseball fan in the family.

  11. I’m a Pirates fan because I grew up knowing they were horrible and now they’re still horrible. I like the achievability of low expectations and the cheap tickets and concession stands.

  12. I’m a Rays fan because I grew up in St. Pete where they play, and I also support my local minor league team, the Albuquerque Isotopes, even though their Major League affiliate, the Rockies, means nothing to me. I definitely mistrust anyone who chooses their team based on anything other than where they grew up or where they live now – that’s just not in the spirit of the game.

  13. The cubs because my family and myself have been in and around Chicago for generations plus my great great grandfather played for the team as well.

  14. I grew up about 500 miles from San Francisco and we got all of their games on TV when I was a kid. Slightly closer to Seattle from where I lived, but we didn’t get Seattle games.

Plus I lived there for a couple years as an adult, went to a bunch of games.

  15. I’m a Dodgers and Astros fan! Dodgers for historical reasons, and Astro’s because YEE HAW!

  16. Hometown team.

The years of pain, heartbreak, and sorrow have been lifted for us this (post)season because my Dbacks are going to the WORLD SERIES! 🐍

  17. Second closest team during my childhood and the closest one *sucked,* two of their farm teams were nearby, and most of all, they were really good AND on TV every night.

EDIT: there’s probably a little bit of Southern regionalism there, too.

  18. I had a summer job at Pizza Hut. When I arrived at work, there wasn’t much to do, so I’d halfway watch the TV while I cleaned tables, filled salt shakers, etc. One TV would have the Rangers, and the other would have the Astros. I didn’t have any loyalty, and the Rangers were doing better than the Astros that year, so I picked them. That impulse decision was a bummer for several years… until now!

  19. I like the Phillies because, on top of the fact that I live in Philadelphia, they’re just a fun team to watch. I mean, not recently, but usually they are! I think they’re a great bunch of guys and it’s so clear that they all like each other and they all (usually) work well together.

I also do think we have the best logo, uniforms, and mascot in the league.
