Not talking about on-air with Ryan Seacrest or the NPR programming that airs on multiple stations. But do you listen to, and would you recommend, any interesting, funny, quirky or otherwise worthwhile local American radio shows or personalities? Could be news, comedy or even just mainstream pop, but the requirement is that the DJ/personality is, as far as you know, hanging out in your local area broadcasting live.

  1. Of course. College radio. Local hard rock station. Local stations while driving through more rural areas. None of my preset stations in my car are national stations (except NPR, which is really MPR and programs much of the set.)

  2. I listen to local sports radio every day. 98.5 The Sports Hub in the Boston area is considered some of, if not the best, sports radio nationwide.

  3. no, most of those stations became automated now, many don’t have DJ’s anymore, the computer does all the work.

  4. K-Country, K105, WQXK Salem-Youngstown-Canton-Akron, Your Hometown Country Station, Doug and Maryann in the Morning.

    Burned into my mind.

  5. I work at a local radio station but strangely enough I really don’t listen to anything in my car

  6. Tampa/St.Pete has two stations that carry NPR content (WUSF and WMNF). The first is a college station (University of South Florida) and carries mostly NPR.

The second is “community radio” and carries mostly local content and programming, and 3(?) hours of NPR news each day. They had a great weekly show called “Music of the Isles” (Irish and Scottish folk music) for about 40 years.

  7. I listen to [KSGN](https://ksgn.com/), which is a local Contemporary Christian music station. I’ve listened to them for a few years, ever since my previous preferred station (Air1) switched from a Contemporary Christian to a worship format. I listened to Air1 for over 15 years, and I was really disappointed when they changed formats.

  8. Yes. All the time.. KEXP is based in Seattle but has hundreds of thousands of listeners all over the World.

It’s a blessing and a gift to have it as my “local” station.

  9. WWCD (used to be CD101 when I was younger, then went to CD1025, now is apparently CD929 🙂 ) in Columbus, Ohio. Alternative rock, locally owned and operated.

If nothing else, listen to their “Undercover Weekends” which are all covers, all weekend. They are the best. I miss them 🙁

  10. We have 1 local radio station, it plays country. The expectation is you stream your music.

  11. WBAP AM. The morning show guys are funny and they keep on top of the weather, which can get scary out here in the boonies.

And if something is going on I want to know about they’ll mention it, and I can look into it further.

  12. No. None of them play music that I like, and none of the sports talk stations talk about sports that I like.

  13. Absolutely I listen to local radio.
NPR has local programming that I enjoy (Michigan Radio is awesome)
Sports radio is better when it’s local as well.

  14. I listen almost exclusively to a local station in Philly, WMMR. It’s technically an affiliate station owned by a national group (not I Heart Radio), but from like 5am-midnight, it’s local DJ’s and a local morning show all being recorded at a local facility just outside Philly city limits. I’ve attended many events hosted by the radio personalities as well.

  15. Yes! Detroit’s NPR station, 101.9 FM WDET, airs NPR programs but also produces a lot of its own programs, including several music programs on the weekend.

We also have a decent rock/indie station that broadcasts out of Ann Arbor, 107.1 FM WQKL. It’s owned by Cumulus but is run locally and prioritizes Ann Arbor and local musicians.

  16. lol I don’t know a single radio station in ATL where I live currently. I can remember some of the channels from growing up in Chicago (93.9, 96.3, 101.9, 105.9, AM1300) but haven’t listened since uhhhh 2015.

  17. No I am officially a Podcast girlie. I have 4 Spotify music channels I listen to on occasion and that’s about it. 90’s Hip Hop. Old School R&B. Seasonal Acoustic. Classical Reading Music.

  18. Yep, we’ve got a few very local stations. Much more interesting mix of music, and talk about local things are much more enjoyable to listen to than the big boys. Only problem is they’re low power so if you go a couple miles out of the city you can’t listen.

  19. I I listen to local sports radio, which is huge in the NYC area. We have WFAN and ESPN NY

  20. College radio is the only live radio I really listen to these days. It’s very local.

I used to be a college/community radio DJ so I appreciate it.

  21. Chirp (CHicago Independent Radio Project) is great.

College stations are where it’s at, away from big cities.

  22. Whenever I visit family, I always enjoy turning on WIIL rock 95.1, mostly for all the local northern Chicago suburb refreces.

Though where I’m at now, I do like WEBN, “Broadcasting high atop fogs mountain, the Lunatic Fringe of American FM, WEBN CINCINNATI”

  23. I’m in Seattle, and we have KEXP here. A pretty huge selection of music, especially compared with most radio stations that play the top 40 on a loop all day/night.

  24. I listen to Dave & Chuck The Freak on WRIF in the mornings (which did get syndicated but they’re still Detroit through and through) and local sports radio on the drive home if I don’t feel like cranking the tunes.

  25. I love the Preston and Steve morning show on Philly’s rock station, WMMR. Especially all the live events they host. They moved the show there after another station, Y100, shut down in 2004. But they’ve been on the air since the 90’s and I’ve been listening to them for over 20 years.

  26. Sure. We have a few AM stations that are owned and run locally. Every Sunday morning they do Talk of the Town where local politicians answer questions from callers. But they do all sorts of local pieces. They often have tables set up at local events and broadcast right from there.

  27. The only time is if I forget my phone and I have no choice. Local radio is awful and full of commercials.

  28. Not typically. I’ll sometimes throw on our local NPR on my drive, which is run through the university. Rarer still is local sports radio. And sometimes I’ll listen to Christmas music during the holiday season. But I tend to stream either podcasts or music when I’m in the car, which is the only time I’d ever listen to radio.
