Men of Reddit, what video game genre is your favourite?

  1. World building games. Things that most gamers don’t even consider video games. Like Minecraft, Stardew Valley, Civilization.

  2. Immersive sims! Deus Ex, Thief, Dark Messiah, VTMB, etc.

Too bad they don’t make them like they used to

  3. RPG

Why fuck up just one life, when I can get an avatar and put him through shit, too?

Frost trolls & Hagravens put my problems into perspective.

  4. CRPGs (especially indie ones) and GSGs (map painting simulators like HoI4).

I also unashamedly play a lot of simulator games though, even though they’re basically autism traps.

  5. I love big fantasy RPGs. Baldurs Gate 3 was fantastic, but Dragon’s Quest, Dragon Age, the newer Zelda games, and even the Pokémon games are all my shit.

  6. 1. Has some kind of system I can grind
    2. Does not require me to pay attention to it

These games are my stress balls. Examples include Pokémon Go and Cell to Singularity. These allow me to play while paying attention to something else like watching a series or YouTube vlog. Simply open Pokémon Go and look at the screen whenever my phone vibrates, then go back to do whatever I was doing

Yes, it’s like the “boring ahh” meme where the person watches Family Guy while doing stuff

  7. Tough one. I enjoy World of Warcraft but I also enjoy Battlefield titles. I guess I lean more towards FPS titles being my favorite genre especially story driven types like Half Life 2 and Portal 2. I love Battlefield for the epic firefights, explosions, planes flying overhead, and the sheer size of the…battlefields…

  8. I like platform games, I don’t have the attention span for other games with massive storylines, I really really wish I did though, I play games like Mario, Sonic, Crash Bandicoot and so on, I also like messing about on red dead and gta but I don’t do the story on there, takes too much time and effort for my liking, good on anyone who does have the patience for games like that though

  9. Racing games.

Doesn’t matter if is a sim, arcade or somewhere in-between I just love racing games. I’ve played games from the start of the genre to Forza Motorsport that just came out a few weeks ago.

  10. metroidvania, adventure, or any game with exploration

i absolutely love world exploration in videogames

  11. Hmm well it’s Bloodborne, so I guess action RPG? I think that’s what those are called when they aren’t called Soulslike

  12. RPGs of all types

I hate games like LOL. They’re short reward based systems and it’s just repetitive. It gets boring fast.

I like story based games where I build my character up.

I started with Pokemon originally. I played almost all Final Fantasy games and Zelda games. Persona is great. Mega Man Battle Network was awesome. World of warcraft is awesome. Diablo was great. Digimon was fun. Shin megami (digital devil saga was my first experience with this series) is fun. Dot.hack is beloved by me. Elder scrolls is amazing even if it’s glitchy.

Rpgs to me are awesome. You can spend 20-40hrs to just complete the main story but most of these games are way more fun when doing side content that can range from 90-120 hours.

You love the characters as you build them up, you learn the background, you get deep into the story, you customize them with equipment, in some games you can customize the character fully, you travel in the game learning about them and the struggles, you build a bond with them.

It’s not just let’s get in for 20-60min like lol and do the same thing we do in every session just this time I might choose a different character or skin but I’m doing the same thing.

No in some if these games choices matter and it can affect you. You also get deep into a story even if it’s fantasy you’re playing in the story you’re not a spectator.

I think this has to do with my autism especially since I find many autistics who like rpgs as well just like me. I enjoy a good story and customization. You get close to these characters very deeply and become attached. I love it and I’ve cried for some like Final fantasy 15 it was hard to say goodbye to Luna and later to Noctus and his friends. I felt that one hard I wish they made the other doc with the alternate ending.

I’ve cried for some of these games so I am attached. I love it.

  13. It’s hard to say, as I sort of have been branching off of the games I grew up with in a way. I guess I can say that I like specific things or styles of each genre. Like while I do like racing games, I don’t feel like the generic vibe from the Fonza series. Just what I have seen of games like that didn’t really appeal to me. They just felt like carbon copies of the games you could play in an arcade with some polishing. I really don’t know where to look for something different. Like in some games with driving as a main component of the game it can be alright.

Just for the most part these days I don’t hang with anyone who games. You really don’t realize how much of your interest in games and just the general hype comes from the people around you. Like you might want to try out a game that seems interesting, and it’s fun for while it lasts. Typically a playthrough or two, depending on how many ways you can play through it. But for the most part you end up shelving it for a while. Don’t get me wrong though, I’m into those games as much as anyone else. I’m just so unsure of what to do.

With the right people I can be into pretty much any genre, and sometimes I wonder about how I can expand the amount of memory my consoles have. Or at least what games to keep installed and what ones not to. After typing all of this out I can say that I like immersive games, that have something going for them outside of the base game features and DLC. I’m not talking about stuff like the Dragon Kart thing from Yakuza : Like A Dragon. Just the world feels alive and real or however you want to put it.

  14. Turn based RPG, strategy, action RPG. Witcher 3, Skyrim, baldurs gate, total war series are in my favs.

  15. RPG’s.

Love the Mass Effect series and played Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen for 2 weeks straight. Still have Fallout 3 and New Vegas to beat.

  16. I like open world RPGs, and MMORPGs mainly RuneScape even though I’ve played for 15 years and still suck

  17. Survival, anything with a massive world that you can build bases in and fight against enemies and the elements in. Minecraft and ark are my two most played games ever for that reason

  18. I love story-driven games like the Arkham series, Last of Us, and the Horizon games. I especially like those games with a stealth dynamic to it.

  19. RPG. I play most types except I’ve never met a JRPG I liked so abandoned trying those.

  20. MOBAs (Pokémon Unite and Awesomenauts)

    Fighting (Third Strike and Melee)

Tactics (Final Fantasy Tactics and Triangle Strategy)

Open world RPGs (Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild)

I can’t pick one. Those are what I play almost exclusively.

  21. Offline RPGs with a wide variety of story, characters, fun gameplay, good dialogue, and music is a plus. I refuse to play online multiplayer games where you have to talk to people at this stage in my life.

  22. Turn based RPGs. I like to just unwind with earthbound or Pokémon. I don’t have the time or energy for anything more demanding.

  23. I really enjoy games I can play with my partner. Plate Up, Overcooked, Stardew Valley, Terraria, Don’t Starve Together, Diablo, Battleblock Theatre, Cuphead, Boomerang Fu, The Escapists, Rounds, etc.

  24. Survival. Games where on day one I’m trying not to starve or freeze to death but by the end of my playthrough I’m a god of death
